Overview on British third sector communication in the last 20 years
There are more than 350,000 registered charities in the UK. Most rely on the goodwill and financial support of the public to survive, but relatively few understand the importance of good communications in developing understanding of their cause an gaining income. Even the bigger charities play a ‘follow the leader’ game, shamelessly mimicking the approach adopted by potential sector 'rivals' rather than choosing to blaze a trail uniquely their own. It is only in the last ten years that communications as a function has been truly recognised and given a place on the Board, and either in spite of, or because of this, many organisations struggle to understand and maximise its potent force. Yet there is no denying that those charities that get it right gain income, public support and media attention.

Session 14.00 – 15.30
Jude Freeman, Director, London Camberwell College of Arts
Creativity and Innovation in Devising Third Sector Messages
This session will explore the potential for fresh thinking in approaches to creating innovative messages and look at ways of introducing a creative catalyst into an organisation. Jude will outline the role of the student volunteering programme at Camberwell in developing University community partnerships and a growing sense of social responsibility amongst arts students. The presentation will pose some questions on the following themes in order to draw upon our collective ideas and expertise:
  • What is your overriding impression of current third sector messages?
  • Has a genre developed, and if so should we strive for greater heterogeneity?
  • In what ways can ‘the creative’ be more pivotal in the communication process?
  • How can we build on what works best for third sector communication?

Today art is not only for the elite but has become part of our ordinary life and is accessible to everybody. Art is a way to communicate. It’s often reduced to a commercial good but it can still develop alternative ways. Art for the world, the organisation created by Adelina in 1995 is an example: contemporary art has become a way to communicate human rights issues. Adelina will give a short presentation of the organisation and the programme Playground & Toys: artists, designers and architects create prototypes of P&T which are selected, built and donate to children in deprived areas in the world.
