The communications industry in Western Europe is highly developed and ubiquitous. Its work often results in multiple and “competing in your face” messages, designed to persuade or sell, products, services, or ideas. The third sector is becoming an increasingly important actor in Europe, capable of boosting economic growth and citizens’ sense of cohesion. However its ambition is not consumption, but the growth of civil society with a shared vision of social responsibility.

This workshop challenges leaders to consider strategies for developing the tools, words and resources for organisational communications which distinguish themselves from other types of commercial advertising messages.

In this workshop participants will therefore explore the strategic and practical implications of the search for appropriate forms of communications; we will particularly focus on the use of art and artists and the communication of ethical issues.

To date organisations in Europe have concentrated on improving the quality and effectiveness of their service and on garnering financial support for development of their provision. It has been observed that in the process, third sector organisations have not focused sufficiently on the issue of communications, in particular the importance of using methods of communication which reflect more potently the social value and ethical basis of their work.

With third sector leaders, with communication specialists and artists, we will explore how creative partnerships between organisations can be developed - using case studies, practical evaluative sessions and an exposition of the underpinning theory.
